IMMEDIATE RELEASE            February 27, 2003

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority approved today (February 27) the sale of land at the Airpark industrial park to a local food product manufacturer.

Bruno’s Old World Foods of Duluth is purchasing a 2.67-acre parcel at the Port Authority-developed complex adjacent to the Duluth International Airport for the purpose of constructing a 17,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. The state-of-the-art building will also feature a temperature-controlled warehouse.

Bruno Tomesch, his wife Betty and daughter Katerina Anderson started manufacturing boil-in-a-bag frozen soups in 1988 out of rented space on Lake Avenue. The family-owned business expanded through the years to its present location at 4410 Grand Avenue, where it has once again run out of room.

With this expansion the company will become more automated, allowing it to expand distribution while maintaining its current workforce of 12 employees.

“Our frozen soups are made and packed by hand with great care, and are extremely popular because they come ready to eat,” said Katerina Anderson, company president.

“We have 12 different varieties of Bruno’s soup, and we also pack for many school fundraising companies,” she said.

The addition of this new business at Airpark brings the total number of companies operating on Port Authority properties to 56 with about 890 full-time employees.
