IMMEDIATE RELEASE             February 26, 2004

A lease extension with a long-standing local paper company was approved today (February 26) by the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.

Andy McDonough, Port Authority business development director, said C.J. Duffey Paper Company has agreed to a three-year extension of a lease for office and warehouse space at the Port Authority-owned Clure Public Marine Terminal.

Established in 1898 under the name Falk Paper Company, a horse-and-buggy butcher-paper supply operation, the company expanded into its present business as a regional distributor of industrial and printing papers, packaging equipment and materials, food service products and health care products.

Upon learning its Duluth waterfront location since 1970 was being developed into a hotel in 1997, Falk signed a five-year lease for 20,250 square feet of renovated office and warehouse space on Port Authority property.

“We needed a large warehouse with convenient freeway access,” said company vice president and manager Gordie Carlson, “and fortunately the Port Authority had such a site immediately available.”

Falk celebrated its century mark at the new Port location in 1998. C.J. Duffey Paper Company, Falk’s Minneapolis-based parent company, assumed Falk’s assets and liabilities in 2000, and in 2002 renewed the lease for the facility at the Clure Terminal for another two years.

“We are pleased to have a company with such longevity staying on our property,” said McDonough. “We anticipate that the company will be here much longer.”

Including C.J. Duffey Company, 51 companies employing about 1,075 people now operate on Port Authority properties at Airpark and on the Waterfront.
