| IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 15, 2005 Duluth, Minn., U.S.A.—The Grande Caribe, a 183-foot, 100-passenger U.S. cruise vessel, is scheduled to make her first visit to the Port of Duluth-Superior on Monday (July 18). The vessel is scheduled to arrive at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) dock at approximately noon on Monday, where Captain Roy Keith, First Mate Dixie Keith and Cruise Director Cassie Doyle will be greeted during a welcoming ceremony sponsored by Visit Duluth and the Duluth Seaway Port Authority. The ceremony will include a performance by the Duluth Community Band under the direction of Ruth Dodge. The Grande Caribe is a sister vessel to the Grande Mariner, which called at Duluth three times in 2004 and twice in 2003. The visits are part of “Lake Superior Grande Tours” offered by American Canadian Caribbean Line (ACCL), Warren, R.I. The Grande Caribe will use the Port of Duluth-Superior as a debarkation/embarkation point twice this year. The vessel is scheduled to depart at 4 a.m. on July 21 with new passengers, and then return again at noon on August 9 as part of a separate excursion (departing August 12). The German cruise vessel Columbus will also make three stops in Duluth this year, on September 9 with European passengers, and September 16 and 26 with North American passengers. Tours for the Grande Caribe commence in Chicago, Ill., and end in Duluth. They include stops at Manistee, Mackinaw Island, Sault Ste. Marie, Munising, Marquette, and Houghton (each in Mich.), Grand Marais, Minn., and the Apostle Islands and Bayfield, Wis. Ranked at two-plus stars by the Berlitz Guide, the Grande Caribe was built in 1997 at Blount Industries, Inc., Warren, R.I. The vessel features a patented bow ramp that allows passengers to disembark without the need for a dock. The six-foot, six-inch draft of the vessel allows it to access shallow waterways, and its retractable pilot house is ideal for sailing under low bridges and locks. The vessel features a swimming platform at the stern and two launches (one of them with a glass bottom) which can be boarded from the stern. - 30 - CONTACT: Rates and additional information are available from ACCL, 1-800-556-7450 or www.accl-smallships.com |
