IMMEDIATE RELEASE             January 16, 2007

 

Duluth, Minn., U.S.A.—The Port of Duluth-Superior’s last cargo vessel departure of the season occurred at 12:07 p.m. today (January 16), with the departure of Interlake Steamship Company’s Mesabi Miner from Superior’s Midwest Energy Resources (MERC).

The Miner departed MERC with about 58,000 tons of coal destined for Presque Isle, Mich. She is scheduled to return to this Port early January 19 for winter berthing at MERC, marking the Port of Duluth-Superior’s last vessel movement of the season. A total of 11 vessels are expected to winter in the Port (see list below.)

The Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., officially closed to vessel traffic at midnight on January 15, and will open again to spring vessel traffic March 25. The Montreal Lake Ontario and Welland Canal sections of the St. Lawrence Seaway System saw last ocean vessel traffic movements December 30. The St. Lawrence Seaway System’s 2007 season reopening is scheduled for late March.
