IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Due to the predicted severe storm, the Friday April 11th 10 a.m. first ship ceremony is being rescheduled to Monday April 14 at 10 a.m. at the Port Authority office.

Duluth, Minn., U.S.A.—The Port of Duluth-Superior’s 2008 St. Lawrence Seaway navigation season is scheduled to officially open at approximately 1:00 p.m. Thursday (April 10) with the arrival of the Hong Kong-flagged Gadwall under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge. A First Ship Ceremony has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 11, at the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.

The Gadwall will proceed to Superior’s CHS grain facility to load approximately 23,000 short tons of wheat destined for Portugal. Commanded by Captain Xinqiang Cai (pronounced “Kye”), the new 607-foot bulk carrier was built in 2007 in China and is operated by Canfornav Ltd., headquartered in Montreal. The Gadwall had discharged a cargo from Chile at Montreal prior to coming to the Twin Ports to load grain. Local agent for the vessel is Guthrie-Hubner, Inc.

The winner of the annual “First Ship Contest” – sponsored by Visit Duluth, 92 KQRS Minneapolis and the Duluth Seaway Port Authority – will be announced during the welcoming ceremony on Friday. The winner will receive a “Visit Duluth” getaway, including hotel accommodations, meals and passes to local attractions.

The Welland Canal section of the St. Lawrence Seaway opened to vessel traffic this year on March 20, tying a record established in 2007, as the earliest start of a regular shipping season since the Seaway opened in 1959. This year, the Montreal-Lake Ontario section of the Seaway opened March 21. The Port’s earliest arrival of an oceangoing vessel was April 1, 1995, with the arrival of the Indian vessel LT Argosy.
