With 322 percent growth, LSW needs new warehouse It's the kind of a problem you want to have: The business is outgrowing its space. As Lake Superior Warehousing Co., Inc., begins its eighth year as operator of the Clure Public Marine Terminal's cargo facilities, the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth is seeking support from the Minnesota Legislature for construction of a major new warehouse. "We can continue to grow and create jobs and revenues in Minnesota," said LSW President Gary Nicholson, "but we must have additional space in order to meet our growing customer demand." Mr. Nicholson says the solution is a 136,000-square-foot warehouse addition next to the East Warehouse. Construction costs are estimated at $4.2 million. Present warehouse capacity is about 255,000 square feet. Since 1991, when LSW was engaged as the Seaway Port Authority's managing agent, annual cargo volumes through the "Port Terminal's" warehouses have increased by 322 percent. |
LSW Needs Warehouse Around the Port |
| "We are now
servicing accounts scattered all over North America, the northwest region and statewide
throughout Minnesota," Mr. Nicholson said. "Most of this commerce is foreign in
origin or destination." In addition to its historic role in handling waterborne cargo, the Duluth terminal has become a principal distribution center for U.S. and Canadian companies moving various forms of forest products, agricultural commodities and manufactured goods. The Port Authority is seeking the money as part of a biennial state bonding bill expected to be adopted by the Legislature this winter or spring. |
