Port Authority Business Development Director Andy
McDonough has been appointed vice-chair of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce Economic
Development Division. "His appointment will help actively support job retention in
our community," said Jack Gabler, Chamber Chair of the Board. The Chamber partners in
economic development programs and projects benefiting the community.

A West European Trade Team sponsored by U.S. Wheat Associates Inc. visited the
Port in October to discuss export market development. Ingrid J. Kauderer, Purchasing
Manager Raw Materials, Meneba Meel B.V., Rotterdam, toured AGP Grain Limited during the
trip. AGP Superintendent Tom Miller was her tour guide.

Fred Shusterich has been appointed president
of Midwest Energy Resources Company (MERC), a wholly owned subsidiary of The Detroit
Edison Company. He replaced John Ethen, who retired in November after 22 years of service.
MERC owns and operates the Midwest Energy Terminal, which expected to break its own Port
of Duluth-Superior coal handling record for the fourth year in a row by reaching 13.3
million metric tons in 1997. Projections for 1998 look even better, at 15 million tons.
The outbound coal record reached in 1994 of 12.15 million metric tons broke records dating
back more than seven decades - when all of Duluth-Superior's coal was inbound.
