Floating Experiment Station

Algoma Central Marine's vessel Algonorth is now home to a floating, working environmental experiment station that uses the Great Lakes as its laboratory. It has been fitted with ballast water filtration equipment designed to expand the ship's filtration capacity to microfiltration levels, thus keeping out unwanted organisms. This is part of a Great algonorth.jpg (15130 bytes)Lakes ballast technology demonstration project sponsored by the shipping industry, Canadian and U.S. agencies, state agencies, the biological sciences, the nonprofit sector and private engineering firms - all working together to prevent introduction of non-indigenous species into the Great Lakes by commercial vessel ballast water. Minnesota's participation in the $1.3 million project is directed by Jay Rendall, Department of Natural Resources, and Ray Skelton, Seaway Port Authority.
