Capital improvements essential for Port competitiveness were the subjects of two recent meetings in the Port.

Minnesota Senate Transportation Committee Chair Carol Flynn (DFL-Minneapolis) brought her committee to Duluth for two days in July to assess the area's transportation needs. Joining them on the harbor tour was State Senator Jerry Janezich (DFL-Chisholm), a committee member and former Port Authority commissioner.

MnDot officials also toured the Port and held engineering and operations staff meetings at the Port Authority to view first hand improvements required at Port Authority-owned facilities.

MnDot's Office of Ports and Waterways administers the Minnesota Port Development Assistance Program, a program established by the Legislature to provide grants and loans for public port improvements. The Seaway Port Authority this year is conducting a $1.595 million improvement project with the aid of a $1.28 million state grant.
