Midwest Energy Breaks Own Record

The largest coal shipment in Great Lakes history was loaded in the Port of Duluth-Superior in July by the U.S. laker Columbia Star. The 1,000-foot Star, owned by Oglebay Norton Company, Cleveland, loaded 64,322 metric tons of low-sulfur coal at the Midwest Energy Terminal in Superior destined for Detroit Edison's powerplant in St. Clair, Mich. Coal's recent yearly average of 30 percent of total Port commerce has increased to more than 36 percent, evidence of ever-increasing demand. Midwest Energy broke its own record for Port coal handling in 1996, reaching 12.24 million metric tons. It expects to set another record in 1997.
