Visitor Center celebrates its 25th The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center celebrated its 25th anniversary in September, just one year after welcoming its 10-millionth guest. The Center is the Lake Superior regions most popular attraction, drawing some 425,000 people annually. The Lake Superior Marine Museum Association was incorporated in 1973 to assist the Corps with support of the facility. The Visitor Centers mission is "to tell the story of Great Lakes shipping from canoes to super-carriers." Colonel Robert Davis Jr., commander of the Detroit District, participated in the 25th anniversary ceremony. Its Columbus Dayagain This Port likes to celebrate Columbus Day. Thats because this Port likes its ships especially the German cruise vessel C. Columbus. She made her second and third visits to the Port in September of 1998, prompting Port and City officials to mark both dates as "Columbus Day."
As was the case during her inaugural visit in 1997, thousands of people were drawn to the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) dock and the Duluth Ship Canal just to see her. In an attempt to develop cruise ship services for the Port of Duluth-Superior, the Seaway Port Authority and the City of Duluth recently completed a dredging project to ensure adequate water depth and dock accommodations at the DECC. New dock bollards and timbers were also installed.
