Around the Port

It's a wrap

The USS Great Lakes Fleet's Edgar B. Speer is tucked in for the winter at Duluth's Clure Public Marine Terminal along with Great Lakes Towing Co.'s tugs Kentucky and North Dakota.

Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Stewart J. Cort closed the 1999 outbound shipping season on January 13 as the last vessel departing the Port of Duluth-Superior.

She wasn't the last ship to do business in the Port, however, as USS Great Lake Fleet's Philip R. Clarke and Interlake Steamship Co.'s Paul R. Tregurtha and Lee A. Tregurtha arrived on January 15 - the same day as the annual closing of the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. They brought the total number of lakers wintering in the Twin Ports to 11.
