Port Passings
Capt.
Archibald W. Kausch, 81, of Duluth, died July 27. Capt. Kausch immigrated
from Germany to New York City and settled in Duluth in 1959 upon the
opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. He served as a stevedore, an independent
contractor for several shipping agents, a U.S. health inspector, a German
Lloyd's Insurance inspector and a pioneer in the sightseeing tour business
during his long tenure on the Duluth waterfront.
Capt.
David A. Johnson, 69, formerly of Duluth, died July 7. He was a
retired captain of the Presque Isle, operated by the USS Great
Lakes Fleet, Inc., Duluth, and also was a former ship pilot.
Thomas
Vittoria Jr., 34, of Duluth, died August 1. He had been a longshoreman
at the Port since 1992 and was employed by Lake Superior Warehousing
Co., Inc. Prior to that he was a laborer with Local 1091.
State
Rep. Willard M. Munger, 88, of Duluth, died July 11. Rep. Munger
was the longest serving state legislator, representing District 7-A
in the Minnesota House for 42 years. Early in his career he had served
as a state grain inspector for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture,
and as a boat construction foreman at Walter Butler Shipyards.
Ron
Rudolph, 60, of Deerfield, Ill., died July 29. He had served as
the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation's Great Lakes representative
in Chicago for 15 years, and worked with Duluth-Superior Port officials
on numerous marketing and promotional projects.
