We
start with Duluth
The
agency formerly known as the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth now is
called the Duluth Seaway Port Authority. The 1999 Minnesota Legislature
approved the modification, effective in August.
"In this 40th anniversary of the St. Lawrence Seaway,
and with the new millenium upon us, we felt it was timely to have a
more representative name," said Port Director Davis Helberg.
"Our old name was less easy to say, and the new
one is also a better reflection of the Great Lakes-Seaway geography,"
Mr. Helberg said. "This is where the Seaway begins, not where it
ends. Placing 'Duluth' first and 'Seaway' second works better in connecting
the map from left to right."
The Port Authority, established in 1955 by the state,
serves as the de facto marketing, promotional and trade representative
for the combined Port interests of Duluth and its neighbor, Superior,
Wis.
The Port is known throughout the maritime industry and
in the federal government as the Port of Duluth-Superior. It handles
more tonnage than any other U.S. or Canadian Great Lakes port.
The Port Authority also has unveiled a new logo. Said
Lisa Marciniak, promotion manager, "The significance of the double
vessels in the new logo is two-fold - to represent the lakers and the
ocean vessels that service the Port and to represent Duluth-Superior
as two communities within a common border - in reality, one port."
