The maritime clubs of Duluth-Superior

The following clubs and organizations revolve around the commercial side of Duluth-Superior shipping activities. Their members are important players in the makeup of our local maritime community. Here's an opportunity to meet club presidents and get a glimpse of each club's activities.

Lake Superior Marine Museum Association

Omnimax Theatre
Founded: 1973

Officers: Vice President Elmer Engman, Innerspace Scuba; Secretary/Treasurer Dave Poulin, retired-Minnesota Power; Corresponding Secretary Patrick Labadie, Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center.

Activities: The association cooperates with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in acquiring, preserving and exhibiting marine artifacts and in presenting programs to the public about Lake Superior Association. Meetings are held monthly at the Visitor Center.

 

 

Port of Duluth-Superior Propeller Club No. 29

Activities: The Propeller Club of the United States is a non-profit organization with members representing every aspect of maritime industry. Its members are dedicated to the enhancement and well being of all maritime community interests on a national and international basis. They are charged locally with promoting the American Merchant Marine and aiding in the development of necessary river, Great Lakes and harbor projects. The Duluth-Superior club hosts a yearly Maritime Day celebration. Monthly meetings are held at a location determined by the president.

International Shipmasters Association (ISMA) Twin Ports

Officers: First Vice President Dennis Aho, Western Great Lakes Pilots Association; Second Vice President Paul Radtke, Western Great Lakes Pilots Association; Secretary/Treasurer Chris McKenzie, American Steamship Company.

Activities: ISMA is dedicated to uniting shipmasters and licensed merchant marine officers in promoting safety of the Great Lakes sailing profession. Membership is open not only to people working in the Great Lakes maritime trade, but also to those interested in and supportive of it. Local meetings are held monthly at a location determined by the president. Port Authority Environmental and Government Affairs Director Ray Skelton was named grand second vice president at the 1999 ISMA Grand Lodge Convention held January in Traverse City, Mich. Capt. Skelton's election puts him in line to become grand president in the year 2001, when the Grand Lodge Convention will be held in Duluth.

Activities: GEAPS is an international professional society dedicated to providing its members with forums to generate leadership, innovation and excellence in grain-related industry operations. The society draws members from support businesses to bring together professionals with different backgrounds but common goals and provides them a network with associates of various companies serving the grain industry. The local GEAPS chapter holds monthly meetings (except during the two or so regional summer months) at the Hammond Supper Club in Superior. It also sponsors a June golf tournament.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary

Activities: The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian volunteer part of Team Coast Guard. Assisting the Coast Guard in areas of recreational boating safety, the auxiliary provides public education, safe boating classes, courtesy marine examinations (CME) and seasonal air and surface safety patrols. The auxiliary supports the Coast Guard's marine safety environmental programs and provides trained air and surface support for search and rescue missions. Meetings are held monthly every third Monday at the Coast Guard Station-Duluth.

Duluth-Superior Transportation Association

Activities: The association provides an opportunity for people who share a common profession - transportation - to meet and discuss current issues. Membership is drawn from a wide spectrum of transportation professionals in the Twin Ports and the Twin Cities in Minnesota and as far north as Thunder Bay, Ontario. The members represent all modes of transportation, including rail, air, water, motor carriers, shippers, purchasers, manufacturers, accounting firms, law firms and insurance firms. Meetings are held monthly at a location determined by officers and/or the board of directors.

Activities: The Marine Association is a non-profit corporation established during the infancy of the St. Lawrence Seaway system with the purpose of furthering the common interests of business establishments directly engaged in, or which render service to maritime trade in the Port of Duluth-Superior. It takes positions on national and regional maritime issues, and cooperates with public officers and other organizations in promoting the betterment, expansion, development and prosperity of the Port.

Activities: This special club is a waterfront tradition. Its members (mostly retired from management positions at various docks and shipping industries) celebrate their mutual passion for life on the Lakes and the Duluth-Superior waterfront. Meetings are held monthly at a location determined by the president.
