Earl B. Olson, a 12-year member of the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth’s board of commissioners and a founding father of the Minnesota Agri-Growth Council, was awarded the Siehl Prize for Excellence in Agriculture. The prize was created by the late
Eldon Siehl in conjunction with the University of Minnesota’s College of Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Sciences to recognize academic, professional and humanitarian accomplishments in agriculture.
Lance Helgeson, superintendent for Superior’s Cenex Harvest States grain facility, was named president of the Grain Elevators and Procession Society (GEAPS) Twin Ports Chapter. GEAPS is an international professional society providing its membership forums on leadership, innovation and excellence in
grain-related industry operations. The local chapter was founded in 1927 and has 40 members.
Tom Ornell, Minnesota Bearing Company, was last year’s president.
The St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC), Massena, New York, named its new traffic center after Deputy Administrator
Erm Cocci. The SLSDC jointly operates and maintains the portion of the Great Lakes St.
Lawrence Seaway System that runs from Montreal to the eastern end of Lake Erie with the Saint Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation of Canada.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture Animal & Plant Health Inspection Office Plant Protection and Quarantine Division in Duluth has named
Jeana Marshak PPQ Officer. Her primary duties include issuing sanitary certificates for grain and regulating dunnage disposal for
vessels visiting the Port. She succeeds Steve Carlson who is now with the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
Capt. Don Willecke was named president of the Western Great Lakes Pilots Association. He is a
10-year pilot and founder of the association. He succeeds Capt. Paul Halverson, now serving as a pilot in the St. Marys River.
David Ross, president and CEO of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce, was elected to the board of directors of the Minnesota Chapter of Commerce Executives.
Port Authority Business Development Director
Andrew J. McDonough was named vice president of the Duluth Skyline Rotary Club. Mr. McDonough is responsible for attracting and the development of new business for Port
Authority-owned properties. He is also a Certified Commercial Investment Member
(CCIM).
The Shipping Federation of Canada, which represents
foreign-flag vessels calling at Canadian ports, elected Gord Smith as chairman. Mr. Smith is president of shipping agents and brokers for F. K. Warren, Ltd., Halifax. President
Capt. Frank Nicol and his staff handle daily operations of the Federation.
Master Mariner retires
Dr. Bernhard Abrahamsson (left) will have to travel back to Duluth to visit with Port Director
Davis Helberg at future Propeller Club functions — he has retired to Colorado. With his wealth of maritime knowledge — a sailor at 14, an unlimited Master Mariner’s license from Sweden, service at the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy — he will be missed. And perhaps occasionally called back.

Robert H. Smith, 93, of Duluth, died April 30. Mr. Smith, an Interstate Commerce Commissioner practitioner, joined the Seaway Port Authority in 1964. He was the Port Authority traffic director for 15 years and then served as a Port consultant until retiring in 1986. Mr. Smith twice was interim port director (1965 and 1968) during vacancies in the executive director’s position. He was active in numerous Great Lakes organizations and was the last surviving founder of the DuluthSuperior Transportation Association.
Justin W. Schneider, 85, of Duluth, died May 3. Mr. Schneider persevered to earn his high school diploma at an advanced age. He was the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth’s first union employee and stayed at the top of the seniority list until his retirement in 1975.
Christian F. Beukema, 81, a former
Duluthian, died May 14. He was a major presence around the Port, working for more than 30 years for U. S. Steel Corp. He retired in 1979 as its vice president of raw materials and lake shipping. He also served as director of the Lake Carriers’ Association and as a member of the board of managers of the American Bureau of Shipping. In 1974 the Council of Lake Erie Ports honored him as Marine Man of the Year.
