Names in the News

U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater swore in ALBERT S. JACQUEZ, former chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Esteban E. Torres of California, as the eighth administrator of the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. President Clinton used his recess appointment authority to name Mr. Jacquez as ad-ministrator, effective January 4. The White House will be submitting Mr. Jacquez’s nomination for Senate confirmation by the 106th Congress. Mr. Jacquez succeeds GAIL C. McDONALD, who resigned as the SLSDC administrator in April 1997. Deputy Administrator DAVID G. SANDERS served as the agency’s top executive during the interim.

Duluth banking executive HELENA JACKSON has been reappointed to the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth by the Duluth City Council. The council originally appointed Ms. Jackson, current treasurer of the Port Authority board, in 1992. She served three consecutive terms as president of the board during fiscal years 1994-97. Ms. Jackson is vice president and senior trust officer of Private Financial Services, US Bank, Duluth.

The Mining Foundation of the South-west named DAVID N. SKILLINGS JR. its 1998 Medal of Merit Recipient. Skillings is president of DN Skillings, Inc., Duluth, which publishes Skillings Mining Review and the Skillings Minnesota Mining Directory. He is also president of Skillings Conferences, which organizes the yearly World Iron Ore Conference.

Port Authority Commissioner BILL KRON was named to the board of Good-will Industries Vocational Enterprises, Inc. Mr. Kron is 3rd District County Commissioner for the St. Louis County Board.

The Iron Mining Association of Minnesota (IMA) elected JONATHON H. HOLMES chairman of its board of directors and LAWRENCE G. DYKERS its vice chair. Mr. Holmes is general manager at Ispat Inland Mining Co., and Mr. Dykers is general manager of Hibbing Taconite. Joining the IMA board are ROBERT BOZICH, president of Malton Electric Co., DANIEL BURKES, president and chief executive at Industrial Rubber Products and DENNIS M. HALLBERG, president of Lakehead Constructors and chairman of Lake Superior Warehousing Co., Inc. Re-elected were Hallett Dock Co. President JEREMY FRYBERGER, W.P.&R.S. Mars Co. Chairman ROBERT S. MARS JR. and Seaway Port Authority of Duluth Executive Director DAVIS HELBERG.

EARL B. OLSON, founder of Jennie-O Foods, was honored by the Minnesota Agri-Growth Council at its 1998 annual meeting for his support of agriculture and agribusiness in Minnesota over the past half century. Mr. Olson, senior member of the Seaway Port Authority’s Board of Commissioners, was also on hand for a January skyway ribbon-cutting ceremony at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation Ports & Waterways Section of the Office of Freight, Railroads and Waterways appointed JANELLE COLLIER to a transportation planner position. She replaces DuWAYNE ELLIOTT, who re-tired earlier in the year. She assists RICH-ARD F. LAMBERT, MnDOT Ports and Waterways director.

Clure Public Marine Terminal operator Lake Superior Warehousing Co., Inc., appointed TIM ROGERS as foreman. He reports to RUSS WEDIN, general fore-man, and assists with the overall direction of Lake Superior Warehousing Co.’s workforce. Mr. Rogers also is president of International Longshoremen’s Association Local 2061.

In January DAVIS HELBERG marked 20 years as executive director of the Sea-way Port Authority of Duluth. Except for six years spent as reporter for the Duluth News-Tribune his entire career has been involved with the Great Lakes shipping industry. He was appointed port director by the Board of Commissioners in December 1978 and took office on Jan. 21, 1979.

DENNIS MEDJO, director of Duluth’s Omnimax Theatre and the William A. Irvin, was elected board president of the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association (LSMMA). LSMMA supports exhibit and program development at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in Duluth. Additional officers are Vice President ELMER ENGMAN, owner of Innerspace Scuba, Secretary/Treasurer DAVE POULIN, retired-Minnesota Power, and Corresponding Secretary PATRICK LABADIE, director of the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center. Newly elected to the LSMMA board were ADOLPH OJARD, general manager of USS Great Lakes Fleet, Inc., MIKE CONLAN, executive director of the Greater Downtown Council, DAVID KRECH, engineer and co-owner of Krech & Ojard Consulting Engineers, and BRUCE VONRIEDEL, owner of Acme Marine Services, president of Marine Trader and a Builders Commonwealth employee.

JAMES S. SAUTER, 71, a retired Great Lakes Port official and a native of Superior, died Oct. 21, 1998. He spent the majority of his career involved in waterfront activities on the Great Lakes, including owning and operating a stevedoring contracting company in the Twin Ports and serving as port director for both Superior and Ogdensburg, N.Y.

RAYMOND V. MAISUK, 62, of Duluth, president of International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1366, died Nov. 9, 1998. He had worked as a longshoreman in the Twin Ports since 1959, the year the St. Lawrence Seaway opened.
