Magazine of the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth * Spring, 1997
.The arrival of the Port of Duluth Superior's first 1997 ocean going vessel had heightened interest this year because of a contest sponsored by the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth, the Duluth Convention and Visitors Bureau and Manney's Shopper. Out of more than 5,000 entrants, Dean Larson of Superior won the contest by guessing that the season's first ocean going vessel would pass under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge on April 14 at 2:37:16 p.m. He was less than one-half hour off the actual 3:04:51 p.m. arrival time of the Lithuanian-flag Kapitonas Sevcenko.
The Sevcenko proceeded to Peavey Connor's Point to load 9,630 metric tons of spring wheat destined for Malta. Mr. Larson will proceed to Duluth to collect his grand prize of a two-night stay at the Inn on Lake Superior, with meals and passes to local attractions.
The Port's navigation season officially opened on March 27 with the arrival of Interlake Steamship Company's Charles M. Beeghly, and the season's first full Seaway arrival was ULS Corporation's Canadian Trader, on April 13.
