Cargoes like this near-64,000 metric tons taken via American Steamship Company's Walter J. McCarthy Jr. to the Belle River Power Plant in Detroit boosted coal shipments from Midwest Energy Resources Co. in Superior to a new high last season. The company broke its own record for Port coal-handling for the third year in a row by reaching 12,243,736 metric tons—20,094 tons above its 1995 record shipments of 12,223,642 tons. The outbound coal record reached in 1994 of 12,156,988 metric tons broke records dating back more than seven decades—to 1923 when all of Duluth-Superior's coal cargoes were inbound. "Strong demand for the clean-burning, low-sulfur western coal handled at this facility should keep 1997 season coal shipments at or above levels reached in 1996," said Fred Shusterich, the company's vice president and general manager. Strong demand is expected to keep 1997 coal shipments at or alcove 1996 levels.Photo lay Tim Slattery
