Lieutenant Commander
BEVERLY A. HAVLIK (left, in photo below) took command of the U.S.
Coast Guard Cutter Sundew in June,
relieving Commander MICHAEL C. HUSAK, who moved to Washington,
D.C., to take a position with the Office of Navigation at USCG Headquarters.
Lieutenant Commander Havlik previously served as the Coast Guard's assistant
contracting officer in Marinette, Wis., where she worked on quality control
during the construction of new, advanced Coast Guard cutters.
MIKE McCOSHEN
(right) joined Duluth's Hallett Dock
Company as general manager in May. He brought with him 24 years of bulk
material handling experience, most recently as terminal manager for six
years at Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad's taconite facility
in Superior. Replacing him as BNSF manager of taconite operations was
BNSF employee MIKE WESTON.
BRIAN LANKESTER
has been named senior sales representative, asphalt & residual products,
for Murphy Oil USA, Inc., operator of the Duluth Marine Terminal vessel
fueling facility. Mr. Lankester, who was brought here by Murphy from a
company position in Canada, replaced ED PRIEM who took a position with
Interlake Steamship Co., Cleveland.
MICK SERTICH was named superintendent at Superior's Peavey Connors
Point Elevator in June. He has been with the company for 24 years and
succeeds LEN KUCZA who retired after 38 years of service.
ART BRANDLI, a Warroad, Minn., producer, was named chairman of
the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council during the groupís
June reorganization meeting. He replaces Stephen, Minn., producer BRUCE
HAMNES, who will continue to serve as a director on the MWRPC board
and was installed in June as the new U.S. Wheat Associates chairman of
the board.
GLEN G. NEKVASIL, director of communications for Lake Carriers'
Association, was promoted to vice president / corporate communications.
Prior to joining the LCA in 1983, Nekvasil was a communications assistant
for Pickands Mather & Co., at that time the manager of the Interlake
Steamship Company. In addition to his duties at LCA, Mr. Nekvasil is secretary
of the Great Lakes Maritime Task Force of Toledo, Ohio, and director of
media relations for the Maritime Cabotage Task Force in Washington, D.C.
ANITA K. BLACKMAN was appointed chief of staff in July by U.S.
St. Lawrence Seaway Administrator Albert S. Jacquez. She formerly served
as director of operations in the Office of Domestic Operations at the
Department of Com-merce's U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service. REBECCA
A. MCGILL, a former intelligence specialist with the U.S. Navy Office
in Washington, D.C., and a veteran with 13 years' experience in military
and commercial maritime operations, was appointed in May as director of
trade development at the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.
KENT R. HORSAGER, former chairman and director of the Minneapolis
Grain Exchange and president of Horsager Trading Co., was named in June
president and chief executive officer of the Grain Exchange. Mr. Horsager,
who has 15 years of experience in the grain industry, succeeds JAMES H.
LINDAU, who retired after 12 years with the Exchange.
The late DAVID N. SKILLINGS JR., longtime editor and publisher
of Skillings Mining Review in Duluth, will be inducted October
8 into the National Mining Hall of Fame at ceremonies in Las Vegas, Nev.
Mr. Skillings was born into and spent his entire working career in the
publishing side of the mining business. His grandfather, Charles D. Skillings,
founded the Mining Review in Duluth in 1912. WestmorelandFlint
Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations, Duluth, obtained ownership
of the publication in July.
