Wood Products Make a Splash
Lakes States Lumber, the company that in early spring leased the last undeveloped lot at the Clure Public Marine Terminal for construction of a 22,000-square foot remanufacturing and distribution facility for foreign and domestic forest products, received its first 2002 German lumber shipments in early April and May.

The Norwegian-flag Menominee, one of two Great Lakes-European Line vessels that inaugurated Duluth-Superior's European lumber imports late last season, arrived first with 4,713 metric tons of lumber, flooring and doors. The Marinette, also registered in Norway, followed close behind with 2,833 metric tons of lumber. In the photo at right, the Marinette's Captain Leif Magnus Pedersen is welcomed upon his first visit to the Port by Authority Trade Development Director Ron Johnson.
The Flinterduin, a state-of-the-art forest products-handling vessel owned by Ancora AFS Shipping, Rotterdam, made her maiden voyage to the Port in May accompanied by Marco R. de Vriend, company chartering manager (photo above right). Additional newly built "F-Ships" in Ancora's fleet include the Finnnpine, Finnwood and Finnfighter. The Flinterduin discharged 3,184 metric tons of wood pulp destined for UPM-Kymmene/Blandin, Grand Rapids, Minn., at the Clure Public Marine Terminal, then shifted to Duluth's Cargill grain facility for 5,923 tons of barley for England.
