Long-time legislator named newest Port commissioner

State Senator Cal Larson has been named a commissioner of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority by Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
Sen. Larson, of Fergus Falls, has a strong interest in areas that affect the Duluth port, including natural resources, economic development and international trade. For the past 12 years, he has represented Minnesota on the Great Lakes Commission.
Sen. Larson began his legislative service in the Minnesota House of Representatives, serving from 1966 to 1974. In 1986, he was elected to the Minnesota Senate and is currently serving his sixth term there.
Sen. Larson is a former president of the Fergus Falls Rotary Club and former chair of the Concordia College Board of Regents. He received a B.A. degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.  The senator, now Port commissioner, has been appointed to a six-year term ending January 5, 2009. He replaces Sharon Clark on the board.
The Port Authority fosters regional maritime and trade development and serves as an advocate for Port interests. It is an independent public agency that manages two tax increment financing districts, owns waterfront properties and an industrial park near Duluth International Airport.
The Port Authority is governed by a seven-member board of commissioners, including two members appointed by the governor; two by its home county, St. Louis County; and three by the Duluth City Council.
