Facts regarding the John A.
Blatnik bridge, which spans
the Duluth-Superior ship
channel, as recently reported
from the Duluth News
Tribune’s “Did-You-Know” files:
The
Blatnik bridge is the
second-longest in Minnesota
at 7,980 feet, according
to the Minnesota
Department of Transportation.
The
highest point on the crown of the bridge is 85
feet above the road.
The
clearance is 120 feet above the 600-foot-wide
ship channel.
The
bridge is lit by 214 70-watt decorative lamps,
which were installed in
1996 and replaced in the
spring of this year. Also,
there are 16 floodlights
on the bridge, at 1,000
watts apiece. (See back
