Green Bay studies Duluth-Superior

Carol Kelso, former Green Bay Harbor commissioner and present Brown County executive, stopped by the Port in July to learn how Duluth balances its commercial Port with the public's desire to be near the waterfront. Fitting, then, that she met with Barb Oswell, director of public relations for the Duluth Convention and Visitors Bureau. Ron Johnson, trade development director for the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, hosted the meeting and shared information from the Port's perspective.

Engineers take a look

This visitor was part of a group of 30 graduate engineering students who visited the Port in May as part of a NAFTA AQUA3 program offered by Michigan Tech. They were seeking a better understanding of Great Lakes shipping and its involvement with environmental issues of importance to the Lakes' ecosystem.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior awarded Davis Helberg an honorary doctorate degree at its May commencement ceremony, recognizing him as one of the nation's leading advocates for the Great Lakes maritime industry. Mr. Helberg, who retired April 1 as Port director and now serves as a consultant for the Port Authority, also delivered the commencement address to approximately 500 UW-Superior graduates among about 2,000 attendees.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta in May appointed John Jamian deputy administrator for the Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration. Mr. Jamian has extensive experience in the maritime industry and international transportation and trade development. He most recently served as executive director of the Armenian Assembly of America, and prior to that served as executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority.

Lake Superior Warehousing Co., Inc., terminal operator of the Port Authority-owned Clure Public Marine Terminal general cargo facilities, was awarded a Robert J. Lewis Pacesetter Award by the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. The award recognized increased international tonnage moved via the facility through the Seaway System in 2002. LSW was the only terminal out of the dozens in the entire System to post a gain last season.

The Minnesota Corn Research and Promotion Council in June elected David Ward, a farmer from Mapleton, chair of the organization. Other officers are Vice Chair Gayle Bergstrom of Adams, Secretary Andy Quinn of Litchfield and Treasurer Jerry Ploehn of Alpha. The council is responsible for the oversight and allocation of Minnesota's corn check-off fund.

The Timber Producers Association of Michigan and Wisconsin has hired Maureen Talarico, former public affairs director for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, as a forestry field representative. The Association serves professional landowners, resource managers, loggers, truckers and converting facilities while promoting public understanding of Lakes states forests as an important sustainable source of natural resources.
