H.I. Weakley,
a Coast Guard veteran and current member of the Coast Guard Reserve, became
president in January of the Lake Carriers' Association, a trade group
representing 12 corporations operating 58 U.S.-flag vessels on the Great
Lakes. Mr. Weakley formerly served as operations manager of the Interlake
Steamship Co., Richfield, Ohio. He succeeded George L. Ryan, who
retired after 20 years as president of the Association one of its
longest serving presidents in the Association's 123-year history. "George's
contributions to the U.S.-flag Great Lakes fleet are immeasurable,"
said James R. Barker, chairman of Interlake Steamship Co., one of the
Great Lakes largest U.S.-flag operators.
The U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation filled
two important positions in December at its Massena Operations
Center in New York. Carol Fenton, formerly the director
of lock operations, was named deputy associate administrator.
Her new post puts her second in command at Massena. Strategic
planning and liaison with varied marine industry groups are
essential aspects of her job, in addition to day-to-day management
of all Massena offices. Her former position as director of
lock operations was filled by Lori Curran, who had served
as an operations specialist with the Seaway Lock Operations
office. Ms. Curran now has authority for the direction of lock
operations, vessel traffic control and vessel inspection programs.
