Port Director Adolph Ojard has been elected president of the American Great Lakes Ports (AGLP) Association. The AGLP is comprised of 12 U.S. port authorities representing the eight Great Lakes states, with full-time representation in Washington, D.C. Begun in 1977, the AGLP advocates policies and practices that foster maritime commerce and provide long-term economic, social and environmental balance for the communities they represent. Additional AGLP officers elected were William Friedman, Indiana, treasurer; and Warren McCrimmon, Toledo, secretary.

The Canadian St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation has named Doug Smith as chairman of its board of directors. A board member since November 2000, Mr. Smith represents domestic carrier members and has served on the corporation's asset renewal and audit committees. Before joining the SLSMC's board, Mr. Smith worked for Ontario Hydro for 26 years.

Robert A. Buchanan Jr. of Duluth's A.N. Deringer, Inc., vessel agency (formerly Svensson Shipping) retired in September after 35 years of service to the agency. Mr. Buchanan was noted as a "Maritime Legacy" in the Spring 2004 edition of this magazine.

 

Gail Rose, operations clerk at Great Lakes Fleet, retired in October. Mrs. Rose started working for U.S. Steel at its Duluth Works Mill in 1966, remaining there for nine years. She then transferred to the Fleet and during her 29 years there she performed numerous functions in administrative systems, including cost accounting, revenue accounting, engineering and operations.
