Commercial navigation season opens
The Port's Great Lakes commercial navigation season began on March 26 with the arrival of Interlake Steamship Company's Lee A. Tregurtha under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge. The Tregurtha proceeded to the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co. taconite docks for about 15,000 tons of iron ore pellets destined for Indiana Harbor, Ind. Captain James Nuzzo was greeted during a welcoming ceremony aboard the vessel.

Utviken launches Port's Seaway season
The Bahamian-flagged Utviken launched the Port's St. Lawrence Seaway navigation season with an April 11 arrival at Duluth's Cargill grain elevators for about 18,000 metric tons of wheat destined for Italy.
Tom McCormick of Fitchburg, Wis., won the "First Ship Contest" sponsored by the Port Authority, Visit Duluth and 92 KQRS, Minneapolis. His guess of 10:30 a.m. on April 11 for the arrival of the season's first "saltie" (the actual arrival was at 10:26 a.m.) earned him a getaway to Duluth that includes hotel accommodations, meals and passes to local attractions. The contest drew about 2,000 entries from 17 states.
