Peter Harris, 75, former Duluth-Superior and Thunder Bay manager of Empire Stevedoring Company, died January 6, 2005, in Green Valley, Arizona. Mr. Harris was a native of Gravesend, Kent, England, and was a merchant sailor before coming to the U.S. in 1959. He was affiliated with Ceres, Inc., prior to joining Empire Stevedoring.

Capt. Carl D. Brekke, 75, of Duluth and Tamarack, Minn., died January 8, 2005, in Duluth. Capt. Brekke, who began his career as a deckhand and spent 42 years with Interlake Steamship Co., retired in 1991.

Two Duluth longshoremen, Earl C. Stewart, 71, and Stanley R. Ericksen, Sr., 65, died in Duluth on December 24, 2004, and January 18, 2005, respectively. Mr. Stewart worked on the waterfront for 45 years, Mr. Ericksen for 48. Both were members of International Longshoremen's Association Local 1366.

Dale Hammerstrom, 69, who held managerial positions with Cargill, Inc., and with Bunge Corp. in Duluth and Minneapolis, died January 22, 2005, in Fridley, Minn.

James Kinghorn, 76, formerly with the USS Great Lakes Fleet, died January 30 in Duluth. A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Mr. Kinghorn was a naval architect who moved to North America in 1957 and worked for Vickers Shipyard, Montreal, and American Shipbuilding Co., Cleveland, prior to joining the Great Lakes Fleet staff in Duluth.

Capt. George Luckenbill, 81, a Great Lakes ocean vessel pilot for 25 years and longtime lakes seafarer, died Feb. 5 in Washburn, Wis. Capt. Luckenbill was with Upper Great Lakes Pilolts, Inc., from 1966 to 1991 after sailing for many years on ships operated by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc.
