Collister
(Terry) Johnson, Jr.,
was sworn in in October as the Administrator of the Saint Lawrence Seaway
Development Corporation (SLSDC). Mr. Johnson had served previously as
president and CEO of FastShip Atlantic, Incorporated, and as Chairman
of the Virginia Port Authority. The SLSDC, along with the Canadian Seaway
Management Corporation, operates and markets the binational Great Lakes
St. Lawrence Seaway waterway that provides global market access to and
from North America’s manufacturing and agricultural heartland.
Dr.
Stephen Bortone joined the University of Minnesota Sea Grant
Program in October, becoming the research and outreach organization’s
fifth director. After over 30 years of working in the coastal subtropics,
Dr. Bortone moved to Duluth to focus on Lake Superior and Minnesota’s
inland lakes.
Mary E. Peters in October was sworn in in October as secretary
of transportation. She will lead the Department of Transportation agency’s
60,000 employees and a $61.6 billion budget that oversees air, maritime
and surface transportation missions. Prior to joining President Bush’s
cabinet, Mrs. Peters worked in Phoenix, Ariz., as the national director
for transportation policy and consulting at HDR, Inc., a major engineering
firm.
