| Gerald “Jerry” W. Goad, 62, a state grain inspector until his retirement in 1999, died December 2 in Duluth. Mr. Goad was born in Michigan, and was a 1964 graduate of Duluth’s Central High School. He worked at Cleveland Cliffs before joining the Marines for three years. He became a decorated veteran prior to his career as a grain inspector.
Armand R. Johnson, 78, who made his way from deck hand to captain, died December 5 in Duluth. Mr. Johnson, born in Superior, sailed 36 years for the Oglebay Norton Company on the Great Lakes and sailed as a mate on the Edmund Fitzgerald. He served as captain on various vessels from 1975 until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Johnson was an active member of the Lake Superior Maritime Museum Association, International Shipmasters Association, Duluth-Superior Harbor Club and Twin Ports Propeller Club.
Paul Korenchen, 52, longtime longshoreman and a member of ILA Local 1037, died January 7 in Duluth. He was born in Virginia, Minn., and spent most of his working career at the Clure Public Marine Terminal. For the past several years, he was employed by Lake Superior Warehousing.
Leonard “Red” Lundeen, 79, who retired as an elevator superintendent after 42 years at Farmers Union GTA (later Harvest States, now CHS), died November 28 in Duluth. A Duluth native, Mr. Lundeen graduated from Denfeld High School and attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he played football and hockey. He was a longtime member of the Grain Elevators and Processing Society.
