Friday, September 7, 2012

Eyewitness News on WDIO/WIRT-DT received a Regional Emmy Nomination in early September. The announcement came from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Upper Midwest Chapter.

Eyewitness News anchor Darren Danielson and photojournalist Glenn Kellahan received the nomination in the Investigative Report / Series category for their story, "Investigating an Underwater Enemy." The news story looked at the hidden and mysterious problem of underwater corrosion in the Duluth-Superior harbor.

"This news team is amazing," Danielson said in a prepared statement. "The crew here gives its all to produce the highest quality news for the Northland. We're proud to see our work continually nominated as some of the
best there is in broadcast journalism."

The two-part series revealed how microbiologically influenced corrosion is eating away the underwater steel along the working shoreline of the Duluth-Superior port. Eyewitness News cameras took viewers on a scuba dive
allowing them to see the corrosion with their own eyes. The stories outlined what federal and state agencies are doing to address an expensive problem that scientists call significant and alarming.

Since 2000, Eyewitness News has been honored with 38 Emmy Nominations.
