Meet our first arrivals
The Port of Duluth-Su-perior's commercial navigation season opened March 26
with the arrival of Interlake Steamship Company's James R. Barker. Captain Brian Laffey
and Chief Engineer Eric Wiese received a "First Arrival Award" plaque from the
Seaway Port Authority of Duluth.
The Barker had been working the lower Great Lakes since
March 11. The 1,004-foot self-unloading bulk carrier traveled light from Indiana Harbor to
the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co. taconite facility to load 56,900 metric
tons of EVTAC iron ore pellets destined for Stelco, Inc., at Nanticoke, Ont.
The Port's 1998 St. Lawrence Seaway
navigation season began April 6 with the arrival of the Barbados-flag Federal St. Laurent.
Captain M. Murali of Bangalore, India, was welcomed by
Duluth City Council President Ken Hogg and several other business and civic leaders from
the Duluth-Superior community in a ceremony hosted by the Port Authority.
Fednav International, Ltd., Montreal, owns the 646-bulk
carrier. She loaded 19,800 tons of AGP spring wheat at AGP Grain Limited in Duluth The
wheat was destined for Allied Mills in Seaforth, England.
