Around the Port
Bon voyage to the Jana
The pilothouse of the tug Jana, identical to that of the Nancy Ann (astern),
had just become a memory as cables were lowered to give her hull a lift aboard a truck on
the way to a new home. Sold by Marine Tech, Inc. (formerly Zenith Dredge), Duluth, to
Harbor Sweep, Salem, Mass., she'll now spend her days pulling a barge that has a hydraulic
lift to inspect the underside of bridges. The Jana was purchased by Zenith Dredge in 1951
for use with the company's dipper dredge barges. She helped deepen the Port of
Duluth-Superior's navigational channels to 27 feet in preparation for the opening of the
St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959.
